Omer Fast is one of the most prominent film and video artists of his generation. In his films, he unfolds a narrative that challenges the boundaries between his own story and the one transmitted by his medium – between contemporary and historical events. His work underscores the tension between documentation and fiction. Martin-Gropius-Bau presented Talking is not always the solution, Fast’s first major solo exhibition in Berlin, which showcased seven of his projects. For the exhibition architecture, Studio Miessen developed a typology that recalled the style and feeling of anonymous waiting rooms. To underline this immersive mode of reception we designed a booklet for the exhibition, placed on each table of the exhibition’s waiting rooms. The format was stylized as tackily designed tabloid magazine often found in anonymous waiting room spaces – in a style typically dominated by big, overdramatized headlines and pictures which capitalize on sensational gossip. The publication presented the plot of each of the featured videos and included an artist interview as well as an essay by Tom McCarthy.
